I'd like to put up a new site where the database is hosted in another server and the CMS (Joomla to be specific)

on my script configuration, how would i put the connection then? Would it be
host = "12.345.67.89";
username = "mydbuser";
password = "XXXXX";
db_name = "db_name";

or
host = "12.345.67.89:3306";
username = "mydbuser";
password = "XXXXX";
db_name = "db_name";

Well, I tried both but neither worked! I was told in another forum that I should allow other IP to connect (through firewall setup in cpanel) but we are using helm for our windows hosting accounts.

You can do this if the remote server allow remote connections.

Check that with your other host...

Thanks Guys! After the changes you made, I can now connect to the database. However, there's a new problem encounted as below

Quote:
SQL=The used table type doesn\'t support FULLTEXT indexes SQL=CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `jos_downloads_files` (

I was told it has something to do with the Joomla problem on MySQL 5 strict mode.

So I guess that's something I have to fix with Joomla, then.

thanks for your help, guys!

On this question, I am looking to write an application in vb, which will use a mySQL database hosted with you guys (can be on either windows or linux as I have both, which would be best?). Can I easily set this up using the mySQL Grant command?

Thanks
Paul

I've just set up a new database on my linux account and added a user.

In the hosts section it has access for %.%.%.%, does % mean a wildcard and therefore any IP/Machine can access the database?

I'm trying to write an application, that can be ran on any machine (which is why I wont know the IP address of the connection) and for it to be able to read/write data. The user name and password will be securely stored in the compiled application. I'll be connecting via ODBC.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated as I have a customer very keen to get this project underway.

Thanks :)

I have been trying to connect for 4 days now and finally I have found he problem. My ISP (Tiscali) block port 3306 during what they term as 'peak times'.

Does anyone who has experience of writing an application to connect to a mySQL database use another port of have a recommendation around this?

Thanks
Paul
